Jonathan Beckham Flanagan, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 29, 1937, in Faubush, Kentucky, to Lilburn Beckham Flanagan and Mamie Catherine Ard.
Some knew him as Junior, others as JB, but to his family and those who knew him through them, he was affectionately known as “Pepa.”
Raised in a humble farming community in south-central Kentucky, Jonathan learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and dedication that would shape the course of his life. In 1955, he left home to begin what would become a distinguished career of service to his country. After completing his initial three-year enlistment, he returned to Kentucky, where he met Hazel Mae Wright, the woman who would become his lifelong partner. In 1959, Jonathan answered the call to serve once again, beginning a military career that would span the next two and a half decades.
His service took him across the world, including assignments in Vietnam, Korea, the Aleutian Islands, Europe, and all throughout the United States. Through years of dedication and leadership, he rose to the highest levels of the enlisted ranks and was among the first students selected to attend the then newly established Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas. Following his graduation, Jonathan and Hazel moved to Virginia, where he served as the senior enlisted soldier at Vint Hill Farms Station. Upon retirement in 1979, he remained in Northern Virginia where he continued to serve his country in the role as a dedicated contractor, serving a wide variety of agencies within the Federal Government.
Though his military career took him far from where his story began, Jonathan never lost the values instilled in him during his early years in Kentucky. He carried those values into every part of his life, building a legacy through hard work, dedication, and an unwavering devotion to his family.
Outside of his military service, Jonathan enjoyed woodworking and took pride in working with his hands. He appreciated the satisfaction of creating something lasting, much like the life and legacy he built over the years. He also found companionship in his beloved cats, Tom and Jerry, who were never far from his side.
Above all, Jonathan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. To his family, he was Pepa: a beloved presence whose influence, lessons, and love will continue to be carried forward by the generations that follow him. The legacy he leaves behind is one that will endure, just as he intended.
He is survived by his daughter, Yvette Gilbert (Michael), of Milton, Delaware; granddaughters Geneva Flanagan, Hannah Haberman (Casey), Rachel Lee (Andrew), all of Frederick, Maryland, and Sarah Gilbert of South Portland, Maine; and grandson Patrick Day (Sandy) of Hagerstown, Maryland.
He also leaves behind his cherished great-grandchildren: Triston Dorfman, Jack and Campbell Dale, Grayson and Calvin Lee, Charlotte Firsing, and Kolten Coleman, along with many nieces, nephews, and dear family friends.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife of 68 years Hazel Flanagan (Wright), a daughter Frances Flanagan, and siblings including brothers Walter Flanagan (Redith) and Everette Flanagan (Nancy), Elby “L.B.” Gaines, and sisters Wanda Hopper (James) and Hazel Watson (Robert). Special mention to his beloved canine companion, Lady.
A small gathering to celebrate Jonathan's life will take place at the family home in Frederick, Maryland, on December 6, 2026. A formal service will follow in the spring of 2027 at Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, Kentucky- his final resting place with his dearest Hazel.
