It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Jonathan Bennington Zengerle, of Ijamsville, Maryland, on February 22, 2025, at the age of 64. The beloved husband of Monica (Niki) Zengerle, Jon was a kind and compassionate soul whose wry humor and gentle wisdom touched the lives of many.
Born on December 26, 1960, he was the son of the late Joseph C. Zengerle, Jr. and Helen (Pat) Bennington Zengerle, of Frederick, MD
Jonathan attended Glenelg Day School and graduated from St. Paul’s School in 1978. He attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and graduated with a BS in 1987.
Jon was employed by Thermo Fisher Scientific as a mainframe Data Base Administrator. His prior employment included four years as a Database Engineer for Computer Sciences Corporation and thirteen years as a Senior Systems Engineer for the Science Applications International Corporation.
In 2001 Jon joined the Sons of Amvets, Post 9, in Middletown, MD, and took the office of 1st Vice, running the membership drive each year. He was directly responsible for a 25% increase in annual membership and the largest Life Member contingent within the Department. Through Jon’s efforts, Squadron 9 has received 3 awards from the Department of Maryland Sons of AMVETS for the highest percentage of membership renewals and 2 “Son of the Year” awards from the Department and from Post 9. In 2021 he took on the additional duties of Finance Officer for the Sons maintaining the books, financial reports and annual tax reporting. He was very devoted to serving our veterans.
Jonathan liked to play trivia and was an energetic golfer. Every year he looked forward to his annual golf trip to Myrtle Beach, a 30 year old tradition, with many close friends. He liked to travel and explore new places, relished a good joke, and was devoted to his friends and family. He had a passionate love for animals and firmly believed that anything with four feet and fur deserved to be fed and cared for.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by Joseph C. Zengerle, III, Elizabeth Zengerle Spindola, Frederick Viele, Robert and Patricia Viele, Beth Bennington and Howard Vasquez, Kirk and Paula Bennington, Dick and Darlene Watkins, Dave and Amy Sutter, Jon Sutter and Suzanne Shulman, Kevin and Jen Sutter, Laura Sutter, Erik Sutter and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick, MD. Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life and share their favorite stories and memories of Jon. Please feel free to wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt in his honor.
