Joseph Lawrence Mattiello

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph L. (Joe) Mattiello, age 68, of Mt. Airy, Maryland, on December 28, 2024. A private service and burial was held on January 16, 2025, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Mt. Airy.

The second of four children, Joseph was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on September 5, 1956 to Carmine and Rose Mattiello. Joe was a 1974 graduate of Oxon Hill High School and soon after began a long career with Amtrak and later with Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro), specializing in automatic train control. 

After retiring from Metro, Joe continued to do consulting work on Metro’s Silver line and for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Joe was a free spirit and forever jokester. He enjoyed football season, deer hunting with relatives, and occasional travel. He had a love of music of all varieties and an untiring interest in automobiles. 

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Rose (2017), and Carmine (2018), and is survived by his siblings: Carmine Mattiello (Darlene) of Ocean View, Delaware, Christina MacIsaac (Stephen), of Falls Church, Virginia, and Gina Montgomery (David) of Damascus, Maryland. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will miss him greatly.
