Joyce Marie McAfoos Skidmore

Joyce Marie McAfoos Skidmore, age 93, of Frederick, MD and formerly of Woodstock, VA, passed from this life on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Homewood Living, Frederick.

Born on November 13, 1931, in Sheffield, PA, Joyce was the daughter of Howard E. McAfoos and Bernice L. (Work) McAfoos. Joyce grew up in Brookville, PA. On September 13, 1952, Joyce married Ronald Lee Skidmore in Crates, PA.

Early in their marriage, their growing family moved to Arlington, VA, where they lived for approximately 40 years. Once her children were old enough, Joyce worked as a school bus driver and later as an administrative assistant at the CIA.

After retiring, Joyce and Ron moved to Woodstock, VA. She stayed in Woodstock after her husband’s death in 2010, caring for herself and her home until the onset of dementia. Joyce was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Woodstock, VA. She attended mass most days and volunteered countless hours working at St John Bosco Outreach House thrift store until she was ninety years old. Joyce enjoyed reading, playing dominoes and cards with family and friends, and taking her grandchildren camping. She prayed the Rosary every day.

In January 2024, Joyce moved to Homewood Living Frederick in Frederick, MD, first in Assisted Living and then in The Willows memory care. She attended St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Walkersville, MD.

Joyce is survived by her six children, Elizabeth Graham (Jim), Joseph Skidmore (Jean), James Skidmore, Margaret Skidmore, Edith Banks (Darryle), and Kathleen Rougeux (Tom). Joyce is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Joyce was predeceased by her siblings Phyllis R. Fitzgerald, Dale E. McAfoos, James William McAfoos, and Leona M. Atcheson.

The family will receive friends from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD. The funeral service will be held at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Rd., Walkersville, MD on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at 2:00pm.
