Judith B. Thomas Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family at Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy, Maryland. She spent her last day surrounded by nature, fresh air, and sunshine, embraced by the love of her family.

Born on January 11, 1941, in Takoma Park, Maryland, Judy was the daughter of the late John and Ethel (Stier) Mackenzie. She grew up in Hyattsville, Maryland, where she attended local schools and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1959.

After high school, Judy began her career as a beautician in Washington, D.C., where she worked with dedication and took pride in helping her family and others look and feel their best. She later found another calling as a bus driver for Frederick County Public Schools, where she lovingly transported children with special needs for more than 25 years. Judy was loved by many and will be remembered for her caring nature and the kindness she showed to others.

Judy loved music and dancing, but above all, she loved her family. She was also a devoted animal lover and cherished the many pets that were part of her life. Her love, laughter, and generous spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew her.

Judy is survived by her loving children, daughter Tracey Young and husband Ken of Mount Airy and David Thomas and wife Vonda of Mount Airy; her grandchildren, Justin Young and Tori of New Market, Matthew Young and wife Kierstin of Frederick, Kelsey Buffington and husband Brandon of Keymar, Taylor Thomas and Austin of Mount Airy, Lindsey Thomas and fiance Andrew of Mount Airy, Logan Thomas of Mount Airy; and her great-grandson, Jackson Young of New Market.

Judy was preceded in death by her late husband, Robert F. Smith; her parents, John and Ethel (Stier) Mackenzie; her sister, Joanne Mackenzie; and her brother, Frank Mackenzie.

Judy's memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved her. Her love for her family, her compassion for others, and her love of animals will be remembered for generations to come.

A Celebration of Life honoring Judy will be scheduled for a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends when arrangements have been finalized.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Judy's name to Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy, Maryland, or the Frederick County Humane Society.
