Kenneth (Kenny) Wayne Johnson, 73, was called home on Sunday, October 19th, 2025. He passed away suddenly while resting between church services.
He was born on June 6th, 1952, to the late Amos and Evelyn Johnson in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He is preceded in death by his parents along with his sister and her husband, John (Bub) and Bonnie Vanorsdale. He is survived by his wife Crystal, two sons, Ken Jr. (Michelle), David (Alysha) and two grandchildren Reeve and Mabry, and Mother-in-Law Liz Shumaker and two lap companions, Angel and Raven. Family meant so much to him. He treasured every visit, especially the time spent with his grandchildren, and took great joy in finding special, thoughtful gifts for those he loved.
He was paralyzed by polio at the age of six but miraculously regained full mobility, with the exception of his right arm. A Martinsburg High School graduate, he held various jobs throughout his career, never letting his disability define or limit him. His deep faith led him to minister in countless churches, serving as pastor of Samples Manor Church of God for 25 years, and most recently, preaching and playing music at Buck Hill Church and Lanes Run.
In his “spare” time, he enjoyed league bowling, high school basketball, cheering for WVU, and rooting for the Yankees. Known affectionately as the “One Arm Guitarist”, Kenny began his ministry in 1969. A gifted singer and songwriter, he could play the guitar, bass, piano, harmonica, and mandolin-all with the use of only his left arm. He often joked, “I play with the left hand, God plays with the right. If you hear any mistakes, it’s the left.”
Kenny shared his music and message across many states, on a mission trip to Mexico, and through numerous radio and television appearances, including performances in Nashville and Branson. In 2010, he was honored with induction into the West Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame.
His motto, “Have Guitar, Will Travel” reflected his willingness to go anywhere to share the love of Jesus. His testimony, talent, and joyful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who met him. Now, he is part of Heaven’s band- playing with both hands and praising the Lord.
A viewing for family and friends will be held on Monday, October 27th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by a service at Full Gospel Pentecostal Church, 36 Laing Drive, Martinsburg, WV. Graveside service will take place at Buck Hill Church, with an invitation to return to Full Gospel Pentecostal Church afterward for a fellowship meal.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to any of the church ministries listed above.
