Lloyd Lee Gilbert, 88, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, at Somerford House. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Jane Gilbert (née Swope), and his daughter, Pamela Lee.
As a young man, Lloyd proudly served with the Seabees, traveling the world to help build and maintain U.S. military bases. Following his service, he contributed to scientific research at the National Institutes of Health and later at BioWhittaker.
In 1967, Lloyd and Betty Jane founded Gilbert’s Refrigeration in Frederick, where they served the community for over 50 years. Lloyd was a strong man who worked hard every day of his life. He was quick with a joke but could be hardnosed and even cantankerous with those who knew him best—a man of principle, humor, and unmistakable character.
He is survived by his son, Brian Gilbert; grandsons, Josh and Justin Thumma; and great-grandson, Cain Thumma.
Lloyd will be remembered for his dedication to family and community, his unwavering work ethic, and the love he shared with those around him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, and his legacy will live on through all who knew him.
A visitation will take place at Bast-Stauffer Funeral home, located at 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro MD 21713, from 4-6 p.m. on Monday November 10, 2025.
