Luther Leonard Souers

July 8, 1935 — June 21, 2024

Jefferson

Luther “Sonny” Leonard Souers, 88, of Jefferson, MD, passed away peacefully, his wife by his side holding his hand, on Friday, June 21, 2024, at Frederick Health Hospital in Frederick, MD, ending his battle with dementia and congestive heart failure. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda, with whom he shared 40 years together, including 27 years of marriage.

Born July 8, 1935, in Jefferson, MD, he was a son of the late Robert M. Souers and Sadie Mae Leonard Souers.

He dropped out of high school to work with his father's general painting and carpentry business, Robert Souers & Son, before going out on his own. Over the years, he was very proud of the properties he worked on in the Jefferson and surrounding areas. He was a very talented craftsman and built his own family home.

In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting skunks with his father. Sonny also worked at the Braddock Ski Lodge for many years, operating the snowmaker and performing general maintenance. He enjoyed fast cars, entered car shows and won many trophies, was a charter member of the Road Angels car club, and was a flagman at local drag strips in Hagerstown and Monrovia.

Sonny had a fondness for gambling on the horses at the Charles Town racetrack, lottery tickets, good whiskey (Crown Royal), and cigars. He enjoyed working with wood, creating clocks, small furniture, stands, swings, picnic tables, and other items. Sonny definitely enjoyed setting off his authentic fireworks display every 4th of July, watching horse racing and westerns on TV, tending to his vegetable garden, and eating seafood (especially picking hard-shell blue crabs).

He volunteered with the Petersville Ruritan Club, and was a member of the Brunswick Eagles, Amvets, American Legion, and Moose. Most of all, Sonny was a collector of ALL things, with a house full of “treasures,” including a large collection of coins and prized marbles.

Later in life, he enjoyed sitting on the front porch, watching planes crossing the sky, talking to visitors, and waving to those passing by.

He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Souers; his daughter, Karen Souers Williams; his grandson, Matthew Hann; his brother/sister-in-laws Mike and Karen Summers, of Jefferson, MD, and Diane Smith, of Jefferson, MD, and her fiance, Barry Welty, of Martinsburg, WV; his niece, Dawn Mowen (Anthony) and their family, of Waynesboro, PA; his nephew, Justin Smith (Cindy) and their family, of Jefferson, MD. He is also survived by special friends Jim Seiss, Jim Keller, and Bernard Funk.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alice Brown Souers; his son, Blaine Souers; his grandson, Tad Routzahn; his father/mother-in-law, Meredith and Dorothy Stine; his good friend, Paul Young; and numerous other family members and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Monday, July 1, 2024, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 North Maple Avenue, Brunswick, MD. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, July 2, at Stauffer Funeral Home, with Chaplain Scott Murrill officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson, MD.
