Margaret Ann “Peggy” Springer (nee Smith) died peacefully on March 22, 2024, in Frederick, MD, at the age of 89. Peggy was the beloved wife of Frederick Springer for 54 years before his death in 2010. She was an amazing mother, managing many years of controlled chaos in our large household. She adored her grandchildren and took pride and pleasure in their successes and supported them in their challenges. A strong, intelligent woman, Peggy earned her nursing diploma from Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital and worked as an RN in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Peggy served and cared for others in her role as a mother, friend, nurse, and active volunteer in her church and community. She always had room for one more at our holiday table and welcomed many family, friends, and strangers into her home with grace and kindness. She was an active member of St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Community in Urbana for over 35 years. She also attended St. Joseph on Carrollton Manor in Buckeystown. We are thankful to the staff at Country Meadows of Frederick and the Right at Home aides who sat by her side for the past several years and who treated her with kindness and respect.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law June Smith and Sister Marcella Springer, SSJ and her sister, Sister Marian Anne, IHM, as well as by her seven children: Patricia Riter (John) of West Palm Beach, FL; Theresa Murray (Tim) of Ponte Vedra, FL: Jeanne Kelly of Frederick; Frederick Springer (Jane) and Timothy Springer of Tallahassee, FL; Meg Timmons (Dan) of Harrogate, UK; and Marcella Shtatman of Frederick. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two great-grandchildren and her brother, Charles.
A viewing will be held at Stauffer’s Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD on Monday, April 1 from 4 to 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Margaret’s of Anitoch, Narberth PA on Wednesday, April 3 at 10:30am, with a viewing one hour prior. Burial at St. Denis Cemetery, Havertown, PA will immediately follow the mass.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice in Peggy’s memory.
