Margaret A. Peet

Mrs. Margaret A. Peet, 90, of Frederick, died Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Homewood at Crumland Farms. She was the wife for 52 years of Clyde E. Peet who preceded her in death.

Born in Detroit, MI on December 18, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Walter A. and Florence R. Abendroth. She also had a sister Florence June Clarke and a brother Walter Arthur Abendroth who preceded her in death.

Margaret graduated from high school in Highland Park, MI in 1934, and graduated from Highland Park Junior College in 1936. After working for 2 years as a governess she went on to complete her Bachelor's degree in Science and Mathematics at the University of Michigan in 1940 and later worked on her Master's degree at the University of Chicago.

While at the University of Michigan in the school of Public Health she worked in research on the Kahn test at the University of Michigan Hospital. Her research on the Polio Vaccine was under the direction of Dr. Thomas Francis. In 1948 she came to Frederick to work at Fort Detrick where she worked as a Virologist for 5 years during which time she met and married her husband Clyde.

In their retirement years, Margaret and Clyde enjoyed world travel including visits to Australia, Iceland, Russia, China, Antarctica, the Amazon Region, Alaska and the Hawaiian Islands.

In her 60 years in Frederick County, Margaret was an active member and leader in many civic and community organizations. In addition to being an avid supporter of both the Frederick Community College and Thomas Johnson High School sports programs, Margaret was a Charter member of the Yellow Spring Lioness Club, and had leadership roles in the Girl Scouting and Maryland Home Economics Organizations.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara F. Peet and husband Robert Gaitan of Arlington, TX; a son, Edwin F. Peet and wife Cindy of Mesa, AZ; a granddaughter, Lauren Peet of Charleston, WV; a granddaughter, Destiny Gaitan of Arlington, TX; and a sister-in-law, Ina Mae Reed of Mount Dora, NM.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Services: Funeral services will be held at the Stauffer Funeral Home Chapel, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be Wednesday, March 14, at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Garrison Forest. Officiating services will be Rev. Elmer Breeden.
