Marty McClellan Sweeney, 66, of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2026, after a short, but hard, battle with cancer. He is leaving behind a legacy of hard work, music, and an immense love for his family.
Marty was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy DeLauter, and his father, Joseph W. Sweeney. He is survived by his stepfather, Daniel DeLauter; his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Gina Sweeney; his children, Alicia Rowland and her husband David, and Thomas DeVaughn lll and his wife Judy; and his cherished grandchildren, Kerryn Preudhomme, Owen Tracy, Zachary Rowland, Matthew Rowland, Madalyn Rowland, Matthew J McClennen and wife Faith, Liam P. McClennen and wife Alejandra, and Bella DeVaughn; as well as great grandchildren, Eleni and Emerie McClennan, Eilah, Luka, and Lonnie McClennen.
He is also survived by his sisters, Lisa Sweeney, Jody Darner and her husband Gerald, Tiffany Whitmore and her husband Michael, and Annette McBeth; along with his beloved nieces and nephews, Zachary Whitmore, Zoey Whitmore, Joshuna Darner, Robert McBeth and wife Erin, and Megan Cox and husband Aaron.
Marty spent his life working as a skilled mechanic and Maryland State Inspector, known for his dedication, strong work ethic, and willingness to help others. Outside of work, he had a deep passion for collecting trains and found joy in music, especially during his younger years when he played the drums in various local bands. He built an extensive music collection over the years and was known for his deep knowledge of musical artists, always able to share a song, a story, or a recommendation.
He will be remembered for his steady presence, his love for his family, and the simple but meaningful advice he often shared: “Life is a highway.”
Marty’s memory will live on in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
Private Viewing to be held at Stauffer Funeral Home, Thurmont, Md on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 10:00 A.M.
Family and friends are welcome to attend the grave-side service to be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at Creagerstown Cemetery located at 8619 Blacks Mill Rd, Thurmont, Md 21788. Funeral repast immediately following service located at St. John’s Lutheran Church parish hall (across the street from grave site).
