Mary Anne Marsten, 56, of Adamstown, MD, and Gettysburg, PA passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024 at her home in Adamstown.
Born on September 11, 1967, in Alexandria, VA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Andrew Marsten and Opal Estelle (Woodfin) Marsten. Growing up in Alexandria, Mary was an accomplished swimmer with the Woodlawn Barracudas swim team. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1985 where she enjoyed performing rifle and flag routines with the Mount Vernon Marching Majors Color Guard.
Mary graduated from Virginia Tech in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Her interest in helping others lead her to a career in Employee Benefits and her role as Director of Employee Benefits. Mary excelled at building and administering Corporate Benefits programs and remained focused on the wellbeing of the employees. She received personal satisfaction working with and advocating for individuals with health related issues, questions and claims.
Mary was a student of history with a draw towards the American Civil War. Beyond the campaigns and the ground won or lost, Mary was especially intrigued with the human aspect of history and the personal sacrifices, stories and struggles.
She shared her passion by founding the Time Travelers of Gettysburg, a social group based out of Gettysburg Pennsylvania open and welcoming to anyone who has an interest in remembering history, not just the Civil War. As the groups first President, Mary organized, lead and followed groups of like-minded, historically dressed friends through the streets and battlefields of Gettysburg. She loved to interact and pose with tourists to promote interest and preserve one of the most complex and interesting times in American history.
A life-long animal lover, Mary worked with and volunteered for many rescue organizations. She opened her heart and home to dogs, cats, birds, ducks and even alpacas. You never knew what Mary was going to bring home next.
Mary made an everlasting impact on everything she touched and everyone she met. Even though she is gone her presence will always be felt.
She is survived by her beloved Gary; siblings Peggy Glass (Wayne), Barbara Taylor; Joe Marsten (Faith), Martha Kabinier (Randy), Bill Marsten (Emily) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA and will be announced at a later date.
