Maureen Smith

Maureen Theresa Smith of New Market, MD passed away Saturday, October 6, 2018 at her home surrounded by family. Born on July 15, 1938 in Manhattan, NY. Maureen was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine (Meagan) Gallagher, Irish immigrants who came to the United States in 1929.
Maureen graduated from St. John’s University, NY and subsequently earned a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Towson State University in MD. Twenty six of her 28 year teaching career were spent at Lisbon Elementary School in Lisbon, MD, where she enjoyed teaching her kindergarten students and ultimately some of her students’ children in years to come. After her retirement as a full-time teacher, she continued as a substitute teacher in Howard County schools for several years.
Maureen was a devoted mother and grandmother. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed summers with the family in Bethany Beach, DE, and always had a book within reach. She and husband Bob enjoyed traveling, including numerous trips to Ireland.
Maureen is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Bob; daughter Erin and husband Mark Lynch; son Kenneth and wife Michelle Smith; daughter Kathryn and husband James McEwen; and 6 grandchildren: Austin, Michael, Matthew, Kelsey, Kendyll and Patrick. She is also survived by her brother Michael Gallagher and his wife Linda.
Maureen will be cremated at Stauffer’s Funeral Home in Frederick, MD. On Saturday, November 3, 2018 a Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Ann Catholic Church Bethany Beach, DE. Following Mass, a final blessing and burial will be held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Dagsboro, DE.
