Listen to Obituary

Michael "Mike" Johnson, age 60, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family in Thurmont, Maryland, on Friday, September 11, 2026.

Born on January 20, 1966, in Frederick, Maryland, Mike built a life marked by hard work, deep devotion to his family, and a trademark sharp sense of humor. In his earlier years, Mike enjoyed farming, establishing a lifelong connection to the outdoors. He went on to found and operate his own fencing business, taking great pride in his craft and strong work ethic.

Above all, Mike cherished time spent with those he loved. He looked forward to family vacations at the beach, visiting Walton’s Mountain, and spending quiet days fishing. A favorite spot of his was Cactus Flats, where he loved hanging out and listening to live bluegrass music. Known for his witty quickness and playful nature, Mike had a unique nickname for virtually everyone in his life—rarely calling anyone by their actual name. His greatest joy was his family, especially his daughter and his extensive family of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Norville and Lillian Johnson; his maternal grandparents, Harvey and Lula Lescalleet; his beloved nephew, Gregory Brashears Jr.; and special cousin-in-law, Jim Riche.

He is survived by his father, Robert Johnson Sr. of Walkersville, MD; his mother, Helen Johnson of Thurmont, MD; and his daughter, Cassie Johnson, and her fiancé Dave Wampler of Kearneysville, WV.

He is also survived by his siblings: brother Robert "Rob" Johnson Jr. and his wife Grace; sister Sherrie McDonald and her husband David; sister Lisa Brashears and her partner Rob Sturgill; and sister Lori Hurley and her husband Larry.

Mike leaves behind his nieces and nephews: Maria Strite, AJ Strite, DJ Long and his wife Kenna, Laura Brashears, Kristi Lewandowski and her husband Chris, and Kelsey Hurley and her fiancé Jacob Fisher; as well as his beloved great-nieces and great-nephews: Alyvia, Katie, Gregory, Brady, Baylor, Gemma, Brinley, Tripp, Wesley, Stevie, Bennett, and Charlie.

He is also survived by special cousins Lynne Riche and Diana "Beanie" Portner, as well as special friends Donna, Molly, Larry, Jason Pasiak, and far too many more dear friends to name.

Services will be announced at a later date.
