Mona Jean Adkins

Mona Jean (Reeder) "The Boss" Adkins, age 89, of Hagerstown, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at her home.

Born in Boonsboro, Maryland on November 5, 1935, Mona was the daughter of the late Mary Edna (Jones) Reeder and Lester James Reeder, Sr.

She graduated from Boonsboro High School in 1953. She worked at the Hagerstown Community College as the telephone supervisor and retired after 33 years of dedicated employment. Mona was a volunteer at the HCC athletic department, Washington County Hospital and Meritus Medical Center. She was also a Notary Public for the State of Maryland for 25 years. Mona was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, for over 30 years.

Mona was the last member of the "Reeder Trio" that cut their record entitled "I Don't Need a Rocket Ship" at Johnson City, Tennessee 50 years ago. She loved to sing and began as early as 6 years of age.

Mona loved and adored her granddaughter, Sarah E. Shantz Bower and husband, Zachary, of Big Pool. She enjoyed her two great-grandchildren, Avery and Mason. Mona is also survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Elwood Adkins, of nearly 70 years at the time of his death. Mona was also preceded in death by their daughter, Kathy Sue Shantz; her granddaughter, Stephanie D. Shantz; her brothers, Mervil, Glenn, Herman, Lester, Jr.; and her sister, Marion Smith.

There will be no viewing and services will be private.

Mona would appreciate memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital because they helped her granddaughter, Stephanie, recover from cancer when she was a three-month-old baby.
