Nelson Carroll Smith, born November 30, 1954, in Myersville, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 10:45am with family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer.
Nelson was a retired Facilities Manager for a biotech company, a role that suited him well - he was the kind of man who could fix anything, and if he couldn't, he would find a way to make it work. That same dedication carried into every corner of his life.
He was a Life Member of the Brunswick Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Company, where he served as an EMT, Rescue Tech, and held several offices over his years of service - a calling that reflected his deep desire to help others in need. Whether it was showing up for a neighbor or responding to an emergency, Nelson never hesitated to give of himself.
Outside of work and service, Nelson cherished time on the water - boating and fishing brought him joy and peace. He had a love of music and dancing and enjoyed Halloween, and decorating his home for Christmas. He was known to bust a move in dances, enjoy scaring people in haunted houses, and keeping people on their toes with all of his ideas/requests.
Nelson is survived by his beloved wife of over 48 years, Joan Smith of Brunswick, Maryland; his daughter, Brandy Greenawalt, and her husband Jason, of Charles Town, West Virginia; his son, Scott Smith of Hagerstown, Maryland; and his mother, Irene Smith of Myersville, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his father, Carroll Smith. He was also cherished by his cousins, in-laws, and nieces whom he loved dearly.
Nelson was a man of big heart and high standards - someone who wanted things done right and who never stopped caring for the people around him. He enjoyed spending most of his time teaching others what he knew and reminding them to “keep it simple stupid”. He will be deeply missed.
