Listen to Obituary

After a long and well-lived life, Norman Jacob Shriver, Jr. passed away peacefully at the age of 84, surrounded by his family, on Monday, April 6, 2026. He was the husband of Sandy Shriver, and they were married for 64 years.

Born on June 13, 1941, in Harrisburg, PA to the late Norman J. Shriver, Sr. and Katherine Durboraw.

Norman spent his whole life in Emmitsburg, MD, first growing up on Main Street and then moving to the farm. He and Sandy were high school sweethearts and graduated from Emmitsburg High School in 1959. They are proud members of the Emmitsburg High School Alumni Association and enjoy attending the annual alumni banquets.

In high school, Norman was a star basketball player, the goalie for the soccer team, and was in the FFA. His senior yearbook says his only future plans were to farm and that’s exactly what he did. In 1962, he and Sandy moved to the farmhouse and in 1964, they started Shriver Meats. He built the business from the ground up. Walter Simpson taught Norman how to process beef and encouraged him to open his own business. Norman’s goal was to have a feedlot with a butcher shop. He was very proud of his business and all the employees who worked for him over the years. Donald Hull, Accountant, had a huge impact on the success of Shriver Meats. Norman was hardworking, usually up before the sunrise to feed the cattle and make sure everything was okay on the farm. He always enjoyed trips to Zurgables Brothers Hardware and Greencastle Livestock Market and anywhere else he needed to go for the farm. His favorite days were when he could be on his tractor in the field raking hay, planting, and discing or mowing the grass.

Norman enjoyed supporting his kids and their endeavors, whether that be at the field hockey or softball field or in the barn with 4-H and FFA. He carried that love over for his grandchildren and rarely missed one of their events. Norman gave back to the community in many ways. He always attended the Emmitsburg & Thurmont Community Show and The Great Frederick Fair. He loved going to the annual Rocky Ridge carnival for a ham sandwich and pie and to Perkins for Sunday morning breakfast.

He was a wealth of knowledge and taught others simply by the way he lived each day. He read the newspaper every night and had a routine of watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. In his later years, he enjoyed putting together puzzles while listening to his country music and had put together over 200 puzzles. He loved watching Mount basketball and the Baltimore Orioles.

In addition to his wife Sandy, Norman is survived by his daughter, Barb Maly and husband Scott; son, David Shriver and wife Denise. Grandchildren Kolby Maly and wife Jenna; Elizabeth Shriver and Russell Rohrbaugh; Shelby Maly; Jacob Shriver and fiancé Drew Sharman. Great-grandchildren Delaney and Kellan Maly. Sister-in-law Linda Shriver along with Sandy’s siblings, numerous other relatives, and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Norman Sr. and Katherine Durboraw; daughter, Pamela S. Shriver; brother, Ernest Shriver; stepmother, Edith Shriver; in-laws Dan and Utie Pittinger; and nephew, Dennis Pittinger.

The funeral home will be open from 12 - 8 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 12 - 3 p.m. and 5 - 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E Main Street in Thurmont.
