Phyllis Houck Smith

Phyllis Houck Smith, 97 of Walkersville passed peacefully at Homewood on June 8, 2025. Born October 13, 1927, in Woodsboro, she was the daughter of the late Ira G. Houck and Beulah Rebecca Smith. Her roots were in the Glade Valley, attending Woodsboro Elementary, Walkersville High School Class of 1944. She studied math and science at Western Maryland College graduating in 1948 and returned to teaching math at Walkersville and Thurmont High Schools. She was known as Miss Houck and remembered for sponsoring dances, decorating proms and advising the Junior Classes. In 1955, she married Glenn Smith and moved to Catonsville, Maryland. She was active at Immanuel UCC, Rollingwood Garden Club and PTAs, where she served as President at the local and state levels. Returning to Frederick County in 1969, she faithfully cared and supported her aging family members and friends. She was an active member of Glade UCC, teaching Sunday School, serving as an officer in the Women's Guild, representative to Homewood Auxiliary, Tawasi Class member and bell ringer. She volunteered at the Frederick Rescue Mission Soup Kitchen, Glade Valley Food Bank, Retired Teacher's Association and the Walkersville Homemakers Club. Following the death of her husband, Glenn in 1982 she served as Church Secretary for Glade UCC until 1996. Mrs. Phyllis thrived as an organizer and committee member. She will be remembered as the family historian, bicycle rider, family holiday hostess, baseball fan, local theater supporter, Werking Otto Reunion organizer and potato chip lover. Her kindness and selflessness were appreciated by all. Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter Lisa Hannibal (Rich) and son Dwight Smith (Jayna), grandchildren Marris Smith (Tobie Stebbins), Cory Smith (Margarita), Mark Hannibal (Mackenna) and Kara Hannibal (Charles Gray). Great grandsons Clark and Rhodes Stebbins, great granddaughters Florence Stebbins and Marion Smith and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Kenneth (Tub), Harold (Hartz) and I. Marvin (Buck) Houck as well as beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Ave. Walkersville on Wednesday June 11 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Glade United Church of Christ Walkersville.
