1943 – 2026
Raymond Joseph Michael passed away on April 23, 2026, at Somerford Assisted Living. Born in 1943, in Hagerstown but growing up in Big Pool and Shady Bower Maryland, Raymond led a life marked by commitment to his career, family, and community service, marrying the love of his life, Elaine Jeannette Carr, in 1967 and never letting her go.
Raymond graduated from Clear Spring High School in 1961, followed by attaining his degree from Towson State College in 1967. His professional journey in insurance began as an underwriter with Baltimore Monumental Life. Demonstrating diligence and expertise, he transitioned to a role as an adjuster and ended his career retiring from ACE/ESIS Insurance in 2015.
In addition to his professional achievements, Raymond served his country as a member of the Maryland National Guard, exemplifying a strong sense of duty and patriotism.
Raymond’s personal life was enriched by his deep love of the outdoors and an active lifestyle. He enjoyed ocean vacations in the Outer Banks and mountain retreats at Canaan Valley, the Adirondack Mountains, and New England, cherished moments spent with his wife and family. An active participant in the Boonsboro Lion Club, he contributed to community well-being with enthusiasm.
A passionate outdoorsman, Raymond found joy in hunting and fishing excursions alongside his son and father-in-law. In his later years, he embraced running with remarkable vigor, completing the prestigious JFK 50-miler six times and nearly finishing a seventh. His endurance and competitive spirit led him to complete numerous marathons, half-marathons, 10k, and 5k races, including notable events like the Frederick Marathon, Ugly Mudder, the Catoctin 50k trail run, Turkey Trot, and the 4th of July Run for Freedom, among many others.
Raymond is survived by his beloved wife Elaine; his children Jessica Claudy (Eric) and Nathan Michael (Kimberly Mead); four cherished grandchildren Kirsten Claudy (fiance Sammy Santos), Bailey Claudy (fiancee Cassidy Watson), Jack Michael, and Katelyn Michael. He also leaves behind his brother Larry Michael, sister Donna Powell, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Boyd John Michael and Nellie Michael; brothers Andrew J. “Jack” Michael and Boyd J. Michael Jr.; and sisters Carol Harris and Mary Ogle.
Raymond’s life was characterized by unwavering dedication to his profession, meaningful family connections, and active community engagement. His legacy endures through the love of those who knew him and the lasting impact of his many accomplishments.
A celebration of Ray's life will be held at Shafer Park in Boonsboro in June; a date to be determined.
