Thurmont

Listen to Obituary

Heaven got a little bit tougher on Thursday, October 22, 2026 when Mr. Richard Lee Crampton, Sr. (Rich) of Thurmont hung up his boots for the last time. Rich passed away at home with his loving wife, Eleanor Rae (Hauver) Crampton, of almost 60 years, by his side. Rich loved his family, his animals, his work, and dessert above all else. Born in Frederick, MD on August 30, 1943, to the late Keefer Roscoe Crampton Sr. and Edna Hazel (Spurrier) Crampton.; his stories of childhood revolved around hard work on the family farm and his horse Bluebell.

After graduating from Frederick High School in 1961, he worked in the family business as a livestock dealer alongside his father and brothers. Rich also worked for Montgomery County School Board for several years, before finding his way back to his passion when he started ERCrampton Livestock and Equipment, LLC. He truly loved his business; especially spending time with his cattle and attending equipment auctions. Marion Auction was his favorite.

In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with family and serving his community. He coached little league and always made sure the boys got ice cream after a big win, or a tough loss. For many years he hauled livestock to and from the Great Frederick Fair for kids in the 4-H program. Rich enjoyed trail rides with his wife on his horse Rusty. Later he passed on his love of horses to his granddaughter, spending countless hours teaching her to ride. He was a steady fixture in his friends and family’s lives making it to all the big events and the small.

From best man at his son’s wedding to never missing a soccer game for the grandkids, to breakfast with his friends (his favorite part of the week); he was always there. Rich was loyal to a fault, dependable, and tough as nails. He wanted his kids and grandkids to have a better life than he did, and he worked until the day he died to make it happen.

Rich was preceded in death by his brothers, James Franklin Crampton (Jim) and Keefer Roscoe Crampton, Jr. (Sonny) and wife Shirley; sister, Joan Crampton Remsberg and husband Bob; and brother-in-law, Garel Lester Hauver.

In addition to his wife, Rich is survived by his son, Richard Lee Crampton, Jr. (Richie) and wife Pam; stepson, Jeffrey Garel Corun, Sr.; grandchildren, Kalee Wolf and husband Chris, Kyle Crampton, and Jeffrey Corun, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Hallie and Emersyn Wolf; brother, Joseph Eugene Crampton (Joe) and wife Mary; sister-in-law, Charlotte Crampton; brothers-in-law, Vic Barker and wife Karen, James Barker and wife Linda; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2026 at the Jefferson United Church of Christ, 3837 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, MD 21755. Funeral services will begin at 11 am. on Thursday at the church with Rev. Tim May officiating. Burial will be held at the Jefferson Reformed Cemetery. Following the burial, the family extends an invitation for all to join for a lunch reception at the Jefferson Ruritan Center, 4603B Lander Road in Jefferson. Formal attire optional.
