Richard Ramsay Kline, Dick, a 5th generation Fredericktonian, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on January 30, 1930, to Ralph Grossnickle and Mary Boteler Kline, Dick lived a full and vibrant life. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Margaret Mitchell Kline, and his brother, Jay Drummond Kline. He is survived by his children, Ralph Ian Kline (Helen) and Lea Kline Allen (Dennis); four grandchildren, Maggie Wroe, Emily Wroe, John Kline (Jenny), and Harry Kline (Dana); and five great-grandchildren, Reagan, Luke, Andrew, Ruby, and Cora.

A graduate of the Mercersburg Academy prep school, Dick attended Franklin & Marshall College for two years before serving as a 1st Lieutenant and paratrooper in the 101st Airborne during the Korean War. Upon his return, he expanded the family business, Economy Oil, to include LeGore Quarries, Superior Concrete, and United Block, eventually employing 450 people. He was a founding member of First Bank of Frederick. He and his wife Margaret owned Glotren, a construction company that managed their 95 rental units.

Dick was deeply committed to his community, serving as a member and then President of both the Frederick County Board of Education and the State Board of Higher Education. He played a vital role in the revitalization of downtown Frederick that started with Bell and History Day, and included the creation of Carroll Creek Linear Park. A loyal Democrat, he was a dedicated supporter of local and national campaigns.

Dick was known for his intellect, curiosity, charm and big sense of adventure. Whether he was flying a Cessna 195 cross-country, leading a 200-head cattle drive on horseback, or attending 83 July 4th Barbara Fritchie motorcycle races, he lived large. He was an avid golfer with two holes-in-one to his name, and a skilled marksman. He will be remembered by his neighbors in Middletown Valley for his homemade apple jack but even more in the many stories of time shared with friends and family over the years.
