Robert J Murray, 86, of Frederick died June 19, 2025. Bob was one of eight children born and raised in San Francisco. He joined the military and served in the Air Force and Army. He retired from the Army at Fort Detrick as a Chief Warrant Officer in the Signal Corps. Subsequent to his military service he was employed by the Department of the Navy as a computer specialist; Computer Data Systems Inc. as a telecommunications engineer; Memotec Datacom (Montreal Canada) as Vice President; Teleglobe Communications (Montreal, Canada) as Vice President; and Science Applications International Corporation, SAIC, as a senior Engineer in the Frederick Telecommunications Division.
Bob was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick, VFW Post 3285, American Legion Post 11, Disabled American Vets, and the Upper Potomac Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. He was a member of the Glade Valley Golf Club (where he played a few rounds every year); a volunteer in police service (VIPS) at the Frederick barrack of the Maryland State Police; a founding member of the Chesapeake Investment Club which he enjoyed immensely; and was a driver for the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program.
Bob traveled extensively, visiting every state in the union. He resided in California, Wyoming, Washington, Territory of Alaska, New Mexico, State of Alaska, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland as well as Tokyo Japan and Terrenia (Tuscany) Italy.
Bob was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his military service in Vietnam where he was exposed to Agent Orange. He underwent two sessions of chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant, and heart surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The excellent medical care he received improved his quality of life for 30 years. He especially appreciated the professional care of Naaz Hussain MD of Johns Hopkins Frederick office.
Bob is survived by his wife Gladys who was his right arm. He leaves two daughters, Sheryl Murray, Frederick MD, and Susan Murray, Walkersville MD. He had two grandchildren, Christine Thompson (Patrick) of Midlothian VA, Robert Lennox of Frederick MD, as well as six great grandchildren: Samantha Thompson, Elizabeth Thompson, Alexis Lennox, Rebecca Lennox, Nathan Cable, Vayda Hines; two great great grandchildren: Ariana Perry and Bridger Perry, brothers Dennis Murray (Cindy) of Dallas OR, Donald, Donald Murray (Betty) of Sonora CA. He was preceded in death by sisters Doris Elizabeth Murray, Jean Murray Dutcher, Evelyn Anita Murray, and brothers Lawrence Wayne Murray and Alan Howard Murray.
He will be fondly remembered by his long time friend Harvey.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. Inurnment will take place at Evangelical Lutheran Church at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to Frederick Health Hospice.
