Robert "Bob" Updegraff, 61, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, after a courageous three-year battle with Multiple Myeloma. At the time of his death, Bob was undergoing CAR T-Cell therapy at Hopkins, but ultimately, he succumbed to an infection that his body could not fight. Born on February 19, 1963, in State College, Pennsylvania, Bob's journey through life was marked by his unwavering spirit, kindness, and remarkable dedication to his family and community.
Bob was the cherished son of the late William and Stella Updegraff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William "Opie" Updegraff.
His legacy lives on through his loving wife, Suzanne (McDermott), whom he married in Hickory, MD, in 1992; their son, Bradley Updegraff; their daughter, Molly Updegraff, and her husband, Matthew Haeger. Bob's family was his pride and joy, and he dedicated his life to nurturing and supporting them.
Bob's educational journey began at State College Area High School, from which he graduated in 1981. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Penn State University in 1986. His career commenced as an estimator and project manager at Brunswick Construction Company, and he subsequently founded Updegraff Estimating Services, where he worked as the owner and operator for 25 years. Alongside his business, he also ventured into home improvement, demonstrating his passion for building and craftsmanship.
Known affectionately as "Bob the Builder," he was often found working on projects, whether renovating homes or tinkering with his beloved 1993 Jeep Wrangler. Bob could also be found in the basement assembling a miniature train set. His hobbies included jeeping, building, golfing, skiing, and enjoying outdoor activities like hiking, camping and especially scuba diving. Bob's homemade Christmas decorations were Epic! Bob and Suzanne's neighbors looked forward to seeing the holiday decorations display and twice were voted as winners of the neighborhood competition. He had a playful spirit, exhibiting a love for Legos, Spaghetti Western films, and cheering for his favorite teams - Penn State football and the Steelers. Bob also enjoyed the camaraderie of several softball leagues including St Peter's church softball of which he was a member for over 10 years. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts and enjoyed a memorable summer at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch. Bob was also a member of the BBDA, a social association of childhood friends from the State College community.
Bob was a man of quiet strength, positivity, and humility. Known for his intelligence and remarkable work ethic, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was the first person anyone called when locked out of their house. He looked forward to snowstorms when he could get out "The Beast" and plow all of the neighbors' driveways and sidewalks. His family and friends will remember him for his gentle nature and the warmth he brought to every encounter.
The Updegraff family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the oncology staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital for their unwavering dedication, compassion, and support throughout Bob's illness. They also extend their heartfelt thanks to friends and family who provided love and assistance during this challenging time.
