Rodney Milton Sewell
July 5, 1946- September 14, 2025
Rodney Milton Sewell, of Germantown, Md, was born on July 5, 1946, to the late John Nathan Sewell, Jr. and Alyce Johnson Sewell in Frederick, Maryland. He passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
Rodney was the second to the youngest of five children. He graduated from Frederick High School in 1964. While in high school, Rodney played basketball and had a love for tennis. After high school, he enrolled in Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) and later transferred to Hood College where he graduated in 1975. After college, Rodney enlisted in the Navy and served six years before receiving an honorable discharge.
Upon returning from military service, Rodney worked for the National Institute of Health (NIH), where he served as a lab Technician and conducted medical research. Relocating to California, Rodney transitioned into the IT field and worked for Hewlett Packard and IBM. While working in IT, Rodney's work included preliminary research and testing resulting in what is widely known today as "touch screen" functionality
To know Rodney was to know a man with extensive knowledge, great enthusiasm, a good sense of humor, and a distinctive laugh. He was an avid storyteller, with a pristine memory. Rodney enjoyed sitting at the kitchen table writing and researching various subjects, and he loved spending the holidays with his family. You could always find Rodney with a book or notepad in hand.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents John Nathan Sewell, Jr. and Alyce Johnson Sewell, brother John Nathan Sewelll, and sisters: Lavaughn Norris, Frances Gray and Donna Smith. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, brother-in-law, and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 26 from 10 to 11 AM at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 11:00 AM in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Frederick.
