Sally Theresa Grove

December 20, 1955 — November 9, 2024

Sally Theresa Grove Ferrier, 68, a cherished wife, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2024, at the University of Maryland Medical Center from complications of multiple myeloma.

Born December 20, 1955 in Baltimore Maryland, Sally was the daughter of the late Chester L. Grove, Jr. (Tommy) and the late Veronica V. Shanks Grove (Ronnie). She was a 1973 graduate of Boonsboro High School and a 1977 graduate of James Madison University.

She is survived by her husband, Drew Ferrier; sisters, Kathy Yommer, Meg Kauffman (husband, Robert); brothers Michael Grove (wife, Brenda), Steven Grove, and Craig Grove; sister-in-law, Kathy Ferrier Nall (husband, Bruce); and many nieces and nephews.

Sally was a devoted teacher and care-giver. She loved children and went to great lengths to meet the needs of her students and their families while teaching special education classes in Frederick and Montgomery counties. She had a knack of assessing the individual disabilities of each child and, in addition to providing academic learning, she focused on the essential functions that could increase their quality of life and enhance their interactions with family and classmates.

Sally had a great love of the outdoors all of her life. She was very much a traveler rather than a tourist. She wanted to see the world as it truly was, and not just focus on the superficial aspects of countries and cultures. Always athletic, Sally enjoyed hiking, rock-climbing, camping, kayaking, and snorkeling coral reefs during adventures that took her throughout the United States and often internationally. Her love and respect for the environment were frequently put into action during her many years working for The Nature Conservancy in the Government Relations Office.

Family and friends were always a central focus in Sally’s life. Her beloved brother Craig certainly felt her presence all his life. She took on many care-giving tasks for him following the passing of her parents. Other family members and friends could always count on her in their time of need as well. In recent years she befriended a family in a refugee camp in Malawi, Africa, making significant differences in their quality of life and particularly the education of the children.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the following organizations in Sally’s name:

1) The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation,https://give.themmrf.org/SallyGrove

2) The Nature Conservancy https://preserve.nature.org/page/81523/donate/1?engrid_session=NGM0NTI3ODMtMDU3Ny00OWI3LTk3ZTYtMTI1M2IyNTIyMjExfDE3MzE5NTcxNzB8MTczMTk1NzMxNXwyfGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lmdvb2dsZS5jb218fGh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm5hdHVyZS5vcmd8

3) The Angel Fund (P.O. Box 171, Point of Rocks, MD 21777, )https://theangelfund.net/ , for the needs of local disabled children.

In addition, to honor Sally’s memory, we ask that you read a book to a child or do a random act of kindness to someone in need.
