Shirley Ann Derflinger

Shirley Ann Derflinger, age 76, of Brunswick, Maryland, died on July 22, 2026. Shirley’s last days were surrounded by family and close friends.

She was born at home in Brunswick on August 24, 1949, to Robert E. and Beulah V. (Lucas) Derflinger. Shirley grew up on New York Hill in Brunswick’s east side with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins all living near and visiting back and forth. Shirley regaled future generations for years with stories of family gatherings and antics from her past on New York Hill.

Shirley graduated from Brunswick High School in 1967 where she was the senior class treasurer, secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America, and member of the Glee Club and drama productions. After high school she went to work for the federal government at the Atomic Energy Commission, later known as the Department of Energy. Shirley retired in 2007 after 40 years of dedicated service.

Throughout the years Shirley was a longtime member of the Brunswick Eagles Auxiliary. She was also a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.

Shirley had a knack for making people feel special. She remembered anniversaries and birthdays and always sent cards to celebrate. She was a special and unique gift-giver as well - sometimes the gifts left you laughing or scratching your head wondering why it was given to you - but the intensions were always well meaning and personal. Shirley was a great storyteller, a little devilish, funny, and witty. She was a jewelry lover and prided herself on using proper etiquette, thus driving home the point of never leaving the house without wearing earrings!

Shirley was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Randall Derflinger, and several special extended family members. Shirley loved her family more than anything, and she leaves behind a sister, Donna Myers (Gene) of Knoxville; nephew Mark Myers (Carrie) of Sharpsburg; nieces Tara Burger (Gary) of Williamsport, Cheryl Hepp (Bob) of Millersville, and Danielle Schofield (Adam) of Myersville; great nieces and nephews Alex (Bri) Myers, Andrew Myers, Jonah Hepp, Coen Burger, Lauren Hepp, Leia Burger, Hudson Schofield, and Sadie Schofield. Shirley will also be remembered by a large, supportive network of cousins and friends.

As Shirley’s health declined in recent years, the family wants to express deep gratitude to the staff at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Braddock Heights for providing care. Special thanks also to Frederick Health Hospice for their assistance in Shirley’s final days on earth. We know Shirley is now walking with the angels.

A memorial service will be held at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 North Maple Avenue, Brunswick on Monday, August 3, 2026, at 11:00am, with Pastor Katie Hamilton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Frederick Health Hospice or New Hope United Methodist Church.
