Stephen Allen Mobry, affectionately known by many as Steve, Sam, or “Leroy’s boy,” passed away on May 28, 2025, at Frederick Memorial Hospital at the age of 76.
Born in Fairmont, Minnesota, Stephen was the son of Russell and Elizabeth Mobry. He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1967 and proudly entered the United States Army the following year. His military career spanned two decades (1968–1988), during which he served his country with honor and conviction. After retiring from active duty, Stephen continued his service to the nation as a civilian employee with the Army until his retirement in 2016. Among his many experiences, Stephen was a survivor of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon—an event that further deepened his already profound commitment to duty, resilience, and service.
Stephen was a man deeply committed to his values—particularly his belief in the U.S. Constitution, in personal accountability, and in lifting up those around him. He was a mentor to many, a dedicated coach of the 12-step recovery process, and a steady hand to those seeking a better path. His passion for helping others, especially in recovery communities, left a lasting legacy.
Outside of his service and mentorship, Stephen had a love for life’s quieter (and sometimes wilder) joys. He built intricate miniature models, found peace in fishing, in farming, and at the shooting range and was a legendary presence at any backyard barbecue. He was known for his skills with a grill, his sharp wit, and more than a few episodes of “half-crazed hijinks” that brought laughter and life to those around him.
Stephen is survived by his beloved wife, Chong “Kim” O Mobry; his sons, Jerry Mobry (wife Sandra Mobry) and Samuel Mobry; and his grandchildren, Ashley Gehres (husband Robert Gehres and their children, RC and Luca) and Kyle Mobry. He is also survived by his sisters, Constance “Connie” Mobry, Susanna Skripnik, Cynthia “Cindy” Eggers (husband Richard Eggers), Joyce “Joey” Biske (husband Larry Biske), and Mary Ann Schmitz; and his brothers, Thomas Mobry (wife Rose Lynn) and David Mobry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Elizabeth Mobry; his uncles Joseph Mobry and William Mobry; and his godparents, Mary and Leroy Lutz.
Stephen’s life was one of purpose, service, laughter, and love—and he will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Service details will be shared with family and friends in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Stephen’s memory by supporting a local veterans’ organization or recovery program of your choice.
