Sterling Eugene Bollinger Jr.

Sterling Eugene “Gene” Bollinger Jr., age 75 of Urbana, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026, following a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Born on May 26, 1951 in Gettysburg, PA he was the son of the late Sterling & Linda Bollinger. Growing up as the oldest of ten, he went on to settle in Thurmont, raising his family and establishing a life centered around hard work and integrity. Early in life he enjoyed supporting his kids in their various sports, FFA, and 4-H activities-often serving as a coach-while remaining deeply involved in the local agricultural community.

For many years, he was the owner/operator of Gateway Orchard, he also built and opened Gateway Farm Market and Candyland, both located in Thurmont. Gene’s passion for knowledge led him to earn his Bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Mary’s University in 2010. This same unwavering dedication defined his 20-year career as a trusted Project Manager for Elm Street Development.

A true craftsman who genuinely loved his trade, Gene took deep pride in the fact that he never retired, deriving great purpose and fulfillment from his life’s work every single day.

Outside of his career, Gene enjoyed relaxing on the golf course and spending quiet days out on the water boating. Above all, his favorite pastime was traveling with Cheryl, his “boss by choice”. Together, they explored new places, with Gene eagerly immersing himself in the history and story of every destination they visited.

Surviving family members include his four children: Gene Bollinger (Colleen), Matthew Bollinger, George Bollinger (Monica), and Dana Bowman (Matt); as well as his devoted partner, Cheryl Bettinger, and her daughters and their families. He was the proud grandfather of eight: Angel White, Jacob Bollinger, Emma Gomez (Moises), Steven Bollinger, Madison Baker (Spencer), Peyton Bollinger, JD Bowman, and Elijah Bowman; and the cherished great-grandfather of Clara Gomez and Magnus White.

He is additionally survived by his loving siblings: Maggie Doll (John), Katrinka Martin, Paula Gills (John), David Bollinger (Shelba), Joe Bollinger (Lara), Mary Sweeney (Hal), and Sam Bollinger (Jodi); his brother-in-law, Carl Bryan; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Lee Bryan; an infant sister, Alice; and his brother-in-law, Lee Martin.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main St., Thurmont, MD on Friday, September 18, 2026, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM where a celebration of life/prayer service will begin at 7 PM.

A Funeral Liturgy will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Saint Anthony Shrine Parish, 16150 St. Anthony Rd., Emmitsburg, MD.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gene's honor to the American Cancer Society.
