Susanne “Sue” Hemphill Hoffman of Frederick, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2026, at Homewood at Crumland Farms retirement community. She was the wife of the late Herbert F. Hoffman, Jr., and their marriage lasted 67 years.
Sue was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby Linwood. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Mount Holyoke College in 1956 with a degree in English. After she and Herb raised their four children in Yardley, Pennsylvania, she returned to teaching and became Director of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Preschool.
She loved dogs all her life, bred and judged Bernese Mountain Dogs, and owned a champion named Max. She served as president of the Potomac Valley Bernese Mountain Dog Club and kept the friendships she made there. Sue was warm and welcoming to everyone, with a beautiful, kind spirit, and she was a role model for us all.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy Hennessey (Kevin); her sons Jeffrey, Scott (Melanie), and John (Amy); six grandchildren, Lauren, Megan, and Teddy Hennessey, Devon and Jonah Hoffman, and Sam Hoffman; and two nephews, Kenneth and Ross Sormani. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 7, at 10:00 a.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Frederick, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the All Saints’ Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, Frederick, MD, or the Potomac Valley Bernese Mountain Dog Club.
Arrangements are with Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. Expressions of sympathy may be offered to the family at StaufferFuneralHome.com.
