Thelma Estella Powell, age 97, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away on June 5, 2023. She was the loving wife of Harold (Whitey) Powell who passed away in 2008. They were married for an incredible sixty-two years and enjoyed traveling, camping, entertaining friends and spending time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Thelma was born on January 26, 1926 in Mountaindale, (Frederick County) Maryland to Guy L. and Kathryne Angleberger Grushon. She graduated from Frederick High School in 1943 where she played violin in the school orchestra and sang in the chorus. Thelma went on to work for Richard F. Kline Construction Company of Frederick, Maryland in the accounting department.

Thelma had a passion for music and had a beautiful alto voice that she shared with her family and friends. Her love for music allowed her to direct the Junior Choir at St. Paul's Lutheran Church where she was an active member alongside her late husband Harold (Whitey) Powell. She also sang in the Senior Choir and was a member of the ELCA Women's group and Homemaker's Club.

In her free time, Thelma enjoyed visiting her favorite vacation spots such as Indian River, Chincoteague and Moncacy River Campgrounds. She also enjoyed reading books, growing roses, playing cards and board games.

Thelma is survived by her daughters Janet Powell of Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Sandra (Lee) Bell of Frederick, Maryland along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren including Michael Joyce (grandson) and his wife Sarah from Maryville, Tennessee; Jeremy Joyce (grandson) from Knoxville, Tennessee; Katherine Bell (granddaughter) from Brunswick, Maryland; William Bell (grandson) from Walkersville, Maryland; Charlee Joyce (great-granddaughter) from Dallas, Texas, Marya Joyce (great-granddaughter) from Maryville, Tennessee, Julia Joyce (great-granddaughter) of Knoxville, Tennessee and James Joyce (great-grandson) from Maryville, Tennessee. She is also survived by her niece, Laura Like and husband Ben; and nephew, Dennis Powell and wife Marlene of Boonsboro, Maryland.

Thelma was a kind and generous woman who deeply loved and cherished her family and friends. She kept a song in her heart and shared it with residents and staff at Somerford Assistant Living Center. Her warm personality will be missed by all who knew her.
