Verle Virginia Slifer, 102, of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed from this life on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at Fahrney-Keedy Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Maryland. She was the wife of the late John Luther Slifer.
Born on September 8, 1923, in Hagerstown, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Theodore and Blanche (Cunningham) Gross.
Verle was a 1941graduate of Boonsboro High School and attended Hagerstown Business College. Verle retired from her food service work with Washington County schools in 1984. Since then, she has continued as a beloved church member, mother, grandmother, and family matriarch. She attended the Mt. Nebo and Benevola United Methodist churches. In the past, she was an active church choir member, pianist, organist and Sunday school teacher. Verle was also active with food preparation for church fundraising festivals. Her favorite pastime was crocheting - making afghans, tablecloths, bedspreads and baby clothes for family and friends, playing bingo, and doing word search puzzles.
She is survived by four sons, Larry (wife, Barbara) and David (wife, Sheila) of Boonsboro, Michael (husband, Ed Leeper) of Port St Lucie, FL, and Keith of Phoenix, MD; four grandchildren, Darrin (wife, Melissa), Crystal Fales (husband, Curt), Jonathan (wife, Jennie), and Erica Martinez (husband, Mario); nine great-grandchildren (Drew Wren (wife, Carissa), Devin and Cole Fales, Matthew, Nathaniel, and Emily Slifer, Katie Delauney (husband, Cody), and Colin and Carson Martinez; and two great-great granddaughters (Emmie and Lainey Delauney). She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janet, granddaughter, Marlo Slifer (Larry), and grandson, Nicholas Slifer (Keith).
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Thursday, November 20, 2025, and from 12-1 pm on Friday, November 21, 2025, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro, Maryland.
A celebration of Verle's life journey will take place on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 1:00 pm, Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home.
Interment will be at the Boonsboro Cemetery in Boonsboro, Maryland.
Memorial donations may be made to Fahrney-Keedy Nursing Home where she received excellent care for the last four years of her life.
