Listen to Obituary

Virginia Lee (Spence) Queen, 92, of Frederick, passed away peacefully on September 1 at home, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 8, 1932, in Orange, New Jersey, to the late Franklin Lloyd Spence and Aurelia Celestine Powell Spence.

As the daughter of a traveling encyclopedia salesman, Ginnie lived in many parts of the country before her family settled in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Central High School, where she met her future husband, Francis Lyman Queen. They were married on April 25, 1953, and married for 45 years, until his passing.

Ginnie is survived by her children: Michael Queen and partner Eva Polston, David Queen and wife Jami, Robert Queen and partner Dawn Thieman, Thomas Queen and wife Christina, and Patricia McGrady and husband Carl. She was the beloved grandmother of 19 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 14. She also cherished her daughters-in-law Bonnie Queen, Charlene Queen, and Cindy Queen, whose love and friendship she continued to treasure throughout her life. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Marcia Harrison-Thornton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; her sons, Stephen and Mark; and her sister, Joan Gordon.

Family was at the heart of everything Ginnie did. Raising seven children and being deeply involved in the lives of her grandchildren was her greatest joy. After her children were grown, she earned her accounting degree and went on to work for Travel Consultants in Frederick and the NIH Federal Credit Union in Rockville until her retirement in 2006 at the age of 74. She was active in the Frederick BPW for many years.

Ginnie gave generously of her time and talents as a longtime volunteer at Frederick Health Hospital. She knitted caps for newborns, served at the information desk, and later worked in the gift shop.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Deb Glosenger and the compassionate staff at Shepherd’s Staff for their loving care over the past several years, and to Frederick Health Hospice for their support and kindness in her final days.

A service will be held on Friday Sept 12 at 1 pm at the Stauffers Funeral Home in Frederick located at 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Jude’s or the Frederick County Humane Society
