Warren Spencer George, 92, of Adamstown, Maryland, passed away from this life on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at Frederick Health Hospital in Frederick, Maryland.
Born on February 18, 1934, in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Paul William George, Sr. and Ethel Charlotte (Carpenter) George.
The youngest of 10 children, he attended Scott High School in North Braddock. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 serving as a Machinist Mate Second Class on the U.S.S. Putnam DD 757 for four years during The Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and returned to North Braddock where he worked on the Union Railroad. He then worked at Critchlow Bus Company and was a bus driver for Penn Hills School District.
He also worked at the Port Authority of Allegheny County as a bus mechanic and was elected Shop Steward. He was elected Financial Secretary of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 85, eventually becoming President of ATU Local 85.
In 1975, he was elected International Vice President of the ATU International in Washington DC. He relocated to Maryland in 1991 and was elected as the Executive Vice President in 1995. In 2003, he became the International President of the ATU, which at the time, represented over 200,000 union members in the U.S. and Canada. He retired from the ATU in June 2010.
As a contract negotiator and active union labor leader, Warren embodied the principles of the ATU. He fought for safe work environments, fair compensation, reliable healthcare, and adequate retirement benefits. He worked closely with local and national government to secure investment in infrastructure, enabling increases in public ridership, and focused efforts to support political candidates and policies that put working families first.
He is survived by sister Viola (George) VandeSteeg, son David (Theresa) George, daughter Mary Lynn (Daniel Goldberg) George, and son Stephen George, as well as grandchildren Ethan Goldberg, Spencer Goldberg, Bennett Goldberg, Elizabeth George, Charles George, and Michael George.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Janice Clare (Bowers) George.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at St. Joseph-on-Carrollton Manor Catholic Church, 5843 Manor Woods Road in Frederick, Maryland.
He will be interred at 1 pm on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Monroeville, PA.
