William "Bill" Howard Smith, Jr.

Bill Smith, 77, of Frederick, MD, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025.

Bill was born on December 8, 1947 in Charleston, SC, to the late William Howard Smith, Sr. and Hazel Scott Smith.

Bill grew up in the Carolinas, and graduated from Camp Lejeune High School, class of 1966. He then attended East Carolina University, where he met his future wife, Arlene. He joined the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department where he served in the Special Operations Division for over 20 years. He then spent 10 years workin for the Army Corps of Engineers. After moving to Frederick, Bill spent 8 years working for the Frederick Sheriff's Office as a Police Information Specialist. Bill's third retirement was in 2011, and this one was successful!

Throughout his life, Bill had a variety of interests, including cars, cameras, firearms, boats, astronomy, genealogy, and history. He was an avid reader and a collector of books and magazines.

In addition to his wife, Arlene, Bill is survived by his daughter Jessica Smith and her husband Peter Humphrey, and his son Jeffrey Smith and his wife, Rachel Childress Smith. He was predeceased by his brother Edward Duffie Smith.

A private reception will be held in the future.
