William “Bill” Hobert Kelly, age 84, passed away Wednesday January 14, 2026. Bill was born April 29, 1941, in Mallory, West Virginia to Reba (Allen) and Hobert Kelly. He graduated from Man High School in 1959 and in 1964 received his B.A. in Physics from West Virginia University. He married the love of his life, Gayle Ray, on April 15, 1965. Bill spent his career as an aerospace engineer working on the thermal design for spacecraft. His career was long and storied, beginning in the early 1970’s and continuing right up to his passing. The first spacecraft he worked on was ATS-6, a first of its kind communication satellite. The final spacecraft he worked on was HALO, a habitation module for astronauts, intended for humanity’s return to the moon. During his over 50-year career, he earned the moniker “Thermal King.” As Bill was known for his unmatched expertise in thermal design, he wrote numerous technical papers and is credited with a patent. Aside from his intellectual prowess, he was most known for his sense of humor, generosity, and love of his family. His absence will be felt by many. He leaves behind his son John (Soraia), his grandchildren Rachel (fiancé Jason) and Logan, extended family, and countless others upon whom he has had a profound impact. A gathering of friends and family will be held Friday, January 30th at Stauffer’s Funeral home in Frederick, MD.
