William Stephen Sherman

October 16, 1946 — November 19, 2025

Mount Airy

William Stephen Sherman, 79 of Mount Airy, MD, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was the devoted husband of Susan M. Sherman, his wife of 57 years, with whom he shared a lifetime of partnership, laughter, and unwavering commitment.

Also known as Bill, Billy, Lil Pop, and so many more terms of endearment, he was often found behind a camera, both in nature, and photographing shows at his church, as well as the Weinberg Center in Frederick, Maryland, where he and Susan both volunteered their time together. His eye for detail and his generosity of spirit touched both the arts community and all who knew him.

Bill found joy in music, attending concerts, festivals, and performances with his family through the years. He also loved birdwatching, often heading out with his best friend and brother‑in‑law, Mike MacConnell, to add new discoveries to his “life list.” His passion for nature and music reflected his deep appreciation for beauty in all its forms.

He embraced adventure and togetherness—whether traveling with his family across the country, spending time at the beach house, or making cherished memories with his grandchildren at Disney. These moments of wonder and joy will be remembered for generations.

Bill dedicated his professional life to the Social Security Administration, where he served as a supervisor. He was known for his commitment, integrity, and care for the people he worked alongside, bringing the same steadiness and thoughtfulness to his career that he carried into every part of his life.

Bill worshipped alongside his family, grounding his life in faith, gratitude, and compassion. His faith shone clearly through his actions: steady support, shared wisdom, and unconditional love.

Above all, Bill was a devoted family man. He showed up always—for his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and his extended family. He taught through presence, example, and the way he lived with purpose, humor, and heart. He leaves behind countless memories, a family shaped by his gentleness and strength, and a legacy that will continue in every story told, every photograph cherished, and every moment of quiet wonder in the family he loved so deeply. He will be forever missed and forever loved.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, John William Sherman; his mother, Marguerite Evans (Schiele) Sherman; and his brother, Robert Sherman.

He is survived by his wife Susan, his children Stefany Sherman Hudak (David) and Michelle Smith; his grandchildren, Aly Smith and Zach Smith; his siblings Deborah Himes, and John Sherman; and extended family who will carry his memory forward with love.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 28, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the start of the service at 12:00 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Maryland. Chaplin Wes Parks will officiate. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Frederick Health Hospice (www.frederickhealthhospice.org), the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society, honoring Bill’s legacy of compassion and care.
