Austin Rohrer

October 21, 1925 — June 15, 2022

Austin Kenneth Rohrer, 96, of Sharpsburg, Maryland, went home to the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.  He left this earth in the same home where he was born on 10/21/25 to Otho T. Rohrer and Mary M. Rohrer.

He is survived by his precious wife of almost 77 years, Margaret I. Rohrer; his daughter, Connie C. Vance; his granddaughter and her fiancee, Kimberly D. Vance and Curt; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Austin also left behind some very special people who stepped up to help, especially during the last difficult years, with chores, food, visits, calls, care, and love:  Nephew, Bobby Rohrer; niece, Maxine Rohrer Palmer; grand-nephews, Tom “Randy” Rohrer and Ken Rohrer; nieces, Linda Duncan and Edna Larkin; friends, Barb Diseati, Nick and Nancy Hill, Richie and Rosalie Jamison, and Randy and Ginger Sprecher; neighbor, Mark Horton; and long-time physician and assistant, Dr. Chan and Laurie.

A very special thank you to his Hospice caregivers - Stacey, Tina, Deb, and Joel.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his faithful son, Jackie L. Rohrer, his siblings Ernest Rohrer, Thomas Rohrer, Marie Rohrer Abbott, Chauncey Rohrer, Sr., Harry Rohrer, and best friends, Nova and Edna Fox.

He was a graduate of Boonsboro High School, class of 1943, the second to last surviving member.

His career was spent in construction, with about 40 years as a construction superintendent for Norman S. Earley & Sons.  He was a wonderful provider for his family and worked harder than anyone we have ever known.  Once, his grand-nephew, Ken, was driving by and looked up to see him on the roof fixing something - at 92!  Last spring, at 95, he did the spring tune ups on his JD mower and tractor, including taking off blades to sharpen.  He loved to hunt with his son and did so until 2018.  His enjoyment of NASCAR - Jeff Gordon - took him and his family to many races, including Phoenix, AZ.

Austin became a born-again Christian as a young man.  He worshipped at the Mt. Briar First Church of God with his family for many years, serving as Elder and Sunday School Superintendent/Teacher for at least 30 years; then Zittlestown; and ending at Bethel Assembly of God.

He took incredible care of his beloved wife through their almost 77 years of marriage and especially the last 35 years since he retired.  He treated her as a “queen”.  They were never apart.  They traveled all over the country, with their last overnight at age 90.  He drove for 80 years and without an accident.  As his family, we know that God gave us the best to model Jesus to us, to love us, and to protect us.  He loved his family with the fiercest of loves.  The hardest thing he had to endure in life was the loss of his son, hunting-fishing partner, and best buddy, Jackie.  Only God got him through that.  The light of his life came in 1969 with the birth of his adored granddaughter, Kimberly “Sweet Love”.  He lit up when she walked in and always hated when she had to go.  He thanked her all the time for her part, along with her Mom, in his caregiving that began small 4 years ago and ended in total care.  He appreciated our sacrifice; we knew he deserved it.  If you talked to anyone who knew him, you would hear “amazing”, “godly”, “loving”, “compassionate”, “sharp”, “determined”, “hard-working” over and over.  He truly “walked the talk”.   There will never be another quite like him.  “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.  Thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things:  enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”  Those of us he left behind to “finish the race” will love and miss him until the day we join him in Heaven.

No services are planned for the near future.  Anyone who would like to honor him with a donation in his memory may give to one of his favorite charities:  Hospice of Washington County, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Samaritan’s Purse, DAV, or the charity of your choice. Expressions of sympathy may be offered to the family at StaufferFuneralHome.com.
