Charles Beck

March 14, 1929 — March 4, 2013

Charles F. (Charlie) Beck II, Mt. Airy, died at his home on March 4, 2013 with family at his side.  He was the son of the late Herman S. Beck Sr. and Marie Lindsay Beck.

Charlie is survived by his wife June (Walker), son Charles F. Beck III, Mt. Airy, daughter Beth L. Beck, Washington, D.C., her partner Nancy Meyers, his sister Clara B. Harris, Kingman, AZ, and many nieces and nephews.  He was pre-deceased by his brothers Herman S. Beck Jr. and E.L. Beck.

He was a graduate of Mt. Airy High School and received a B.S. degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.  He served 3 years in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.

Charlie began working with the State of Maryland Division of Parole and Probation as a parole officer in 1956 and retired 40 years later as a field supervisor. He also worked for many years as a registrar in the Holy Cross Hospital emergency room. Charlie was very involved with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) where he served as both steward and president of Local 2203 and vice president of Council 92.  He was a member in numerous local civic and political organizations including the American Legion, Mt. Airy Kiwanis Club where he served as president, Carroll County Central Democratic Committee, and the Carroll County Public Library as a member of the Board of Trustees.   He was a long time member of St. James Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry.  In 2003 he transferred his membership to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he remained a member until his death.

In his leisure time he went trout fishing, hiking, camping, loved gardening and yard work, collecting antiques, “tending” to his ’56 T-bird, and attending Orioles’ games.

The family expresses sincere gratitude to our dear friends - Alan and Gerlinde, Mary Ann and Delaine, Walter and Elizabeth, Ed and Clydia - for their support during this incredible journey.  Special thanks to Samantha, Agnes, and James for their compassion and love expressed to Charlie.

A graveside service will be held on March 8, 2013 at 12 noon at Prospect Cemetery in Mt. Airy with the Revered Portia Hirschman officiating.  Following the service, the family will receive friends at St. James Episcopal Church in Mt. Airy.
