Charles Stokes

July 9, 1941 — February 13, 2021

Charles Shannon Stokes, 79, formerly of State College, PA passed from this life on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, MD.  He was the beloved husband of Louise Carver Stokes, of Orlando, FL for 57 years.

Born on July 9, 1941, in Berea, KY, he was the son of the late Burches and Emma Elizabeth (Queen) Stokes.

After graduating from Lockland High School in Cincinnati, OH, he attended Georgetown College in Kentucky where, in addition to meeting his wife Louise and getting his degree in Sociology, he was president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity for two years and a teaching assistant to the late Dr. Richard Scudder.

He went on to obtain his Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociology at the University of Kentucky in 1968.  He then joined the faculty at the University of Georgia as an assistant professor, where he taught until 1973, when he accepted a position at the Pennsylvania State University.  He was on the faculty at Penn State until his retirement in 2007 where, in addition to teaching, he acted as an advisor to multiple graduate students, served as head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, and as an assistant dean in the College of Agriculture. He enjoyed golf and was a passionate fan of Penn State football.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons Charles S. Stokes II and John C. Stokes II, daughters-in-law Anne A. Stokes and Andrea M. Stokes, grandchildren Johanna L. Stokes, Miranda E. Stokes, Isabelle C. Stokes and John C. Stokes, and sister Gale Mueller of Mt. Dora, FL.

He was preceded in death by his brother John C. Stokes.

Services and interment will be private.
