Evelyn Kendle

August 15, 1928 — March 31, 2020

Evelyn LaVerne Kendle, 91, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away peacefully, March 31, 2020 at Julia Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Born on August 15, 1928, in Rohrersville , Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Howard, Sr.  and Leah Naomi (Holmes) Colbert.

She was the beloved wife of the late Preston LeRoy Kendle who passed away in 1971.

After graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1946, she worked in a law firm and later on at City Hall, stopping work when her children were born.  After her husband died in 1971, she went to work for the Snowberger and Sharrett auto dealerships.

She was a long-time member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Hagerstown.  LaVerne loved to sing and play the piano.  She was a member of the Chancel Choir and played the piano for the women’s Sunday school classes.  She played the piano for “The Three Voices,” a singing group, and performed twice at the Maryland Theatre with the group.  She also loved to read and do crossword puzzles.

LaVerne is survived by her daughter, Dana Kelly and her husband Philip of Lake Frederick VA, son Daniel David Kendle of Hagerstown, grandson Michael Kelly,  his wife Elyse, and great-grandsons Owen and Ryan Kelly all of Topsfield MA, niece Sondra Locher and her husband Richard of Crofton MD.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was pre-deceased by her brother Lawrence H. Colbert, Jr.

A memorial service of LaVerne’s life will be announced at a later date.  A private interment will be will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Maryland.
