George Walker, Jr.

November 20, 1935 — March 24, 2020

George Alvin Walker, Jr of Monrovia, Maryland passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 24, 2020 at the young age of 84 years at Carroll Hospital in Westminster, Maryland.

George was born on November 20, 1935 in Georgetown to the late George Alvin Walker, Sr and Dorothy Donovan Walker. He is preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Jane Fitzsimmons (George), William Barrington and his reliable son-in-law Ricky Coleman.

He married the woman of his dreams, Mary Kathryn Walker “Kathy” and they lived happily ever after for 59 years.

George and Kathy were blessed with three children Joan Coleman (Ricky) of Monrovia, Maryland, John Walker of Braddock Heights, Maryland and Janet Walker (George Phifer) of Cloverly, Maryland.

He was blessed again with eight amazing Grandchildren; Kristen Coleman (Sajad), Kyle Coleman, Keegan Coleman, Sydney Walker, Morgan Walker, Johnny Walker, Nicole Bieber, Patrick Bieber plus two Great Grandchildren; Caleb Coleman and Kolten Coleman.

He is survived by his older sister, Ellen Dyson of Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Additionally, he is survived by a variety of nephews, nieces, and a sister and brother in law. He was so well thought of that he had several Godchildren: Michael, Peter and Jessie. He also leaves behind childhood friends, old and new friends and friends he even had a special language that only they could understand.

George was born and raised in the Georgetown community of Washington, DC. George and Kathy later moved to Silver Spring, Maryland where they raised their family before settling in Monrovia, Maryland.

George attended Archbishop Carroll High School, Washington DC when it opened in 1951 and was the first graduating class. He went onto college at American University, Washington, DC.

He was proudly a man of service; George served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during which time he earned the National Defense Medal, Marine Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Select Marine Corps Reserve Medal, and the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

George was a Banker by trade. He retired from Riggs National Bank after over 40 years of service.

George was unswerving in his commitments and volunteering to country, his Parrish St. Ignatius, Ijamsville, MD and previously St. Bernadette’s, Silver Spring, MD, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, neighbors, friends, and family and never turned his back to anybody in times of need.

George was passionate about spending time with his wife, family and friends. He enjoyed designing and making furniture including cradles, rocking horses and chairs for his grandchildren and others. George loved spending time outdoors, beaches and his property in West Virginia.

George was front and center of our lives.  Compassionate, quick witted and always ready with a joke; he loved talking, interacting and was the Master of storytelling.  Gatherings with family and friends were his favorite times. Headstrong and obstinate, he would give his opinion without flinching.  He had enough of an open mind to not dismiss your opinion or your plans, therefore everyone who knew George cheerfully called him “Grumpy”.

Today George is free from pain. He is celebrating and telling stories with all the family and friends who passed on before him. He will be greatly missed but we are comforted by knowing that his spirit, ideals and stories live on within all the lives that he touched.  He was the bedrock of our lives. Semper Fidelis Daddy!

A “Celebration of Life” will be announced at a later date when we can all get together in George’s honor.
