Gregory Bannon

August 23, 1953 — June 29, 2022

Gregory C. Bannon, 68 of Boonsboro, died in the home that he loved, on June 29, 2022 after a two-year battle with esophageal cancer.
He was born on August 23, 1953, in Washington DC to the late Chester Dorman Sr. and Leora Elizabeth (Lawley) Bannon. He was a 1971 graduate of Frederick High School. It was there that he met Marsha Cantor, who would become his high school sweetheart and wife who would stand by him through the best and the worst of times for over 50 years.

He earned his way through college at the University of Maryland-College Park by working at the School of Business Administration through the year and obtaining summer employment with the National Bureau of Standards, Health and Human Services Administration, U.S. Office of Education and President Gerald Ford’s Clemency Board.
After graduating from Maryland with high honors and earning a degree in political science, he continued his education at the University of Maryland School of Law. There he received the American Jurisprudence Award in Criminal Procedure. Since the award was a book and not a cash prize, he continued putting himself through school by clerking at the United States Attorney’s Office and for the late Honorable Robert L. Sullivan of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore City. He was an inspiration to Greg throughout his legal career.

He came to Hagerstown in 1979 and began working for the law firm of Wachs, Kreykenbohm and Boone which later became Wachs, Boone and Bannon. In 1990, he started his own firm with the Law Offices of Gregory C. Bannon where he worked until his retirement in 2016. He was most appreciative of his hard working staff including Joyce Kramer, his daughter Emily Bannon, Tressa Clifford, Kristy Shockey, Pam Wilhide, Bonnie House and attorney James Balog.
Greg previously served on the boards of directors for the following organizations: Washington County Bar Association, American Political Items Collectors, MIHI Inc., Memorial Recreation Inc. and the Parent Child Center. He also served on the Maryland Judicial Committee and the Citizen’s Advisory Committee of the Washington County Board of Education.
While Greg was deeply troubled by the uncivil discourse in American politics today, he was proud to die a Republican.

Greg is survived by his loving wife Marsha and his beloved daughter Emily and her fiancé Adam Reid. Greg was so very grateful for all the love and continuous support Emily gave him. He is also survived by his sisters, Pat Harris of Dover, Delaware and Peggy Boyer and husband Bill of Jefferson, as well as brothers “Butch” Bannon of Harpers Ferry and Dale Bannon and wife Cherie of Hagerstown. He is also survived by his precious dog and cat, Daisy and Johnny.

He will also be missed by his hearts card-playing buddies, Joe Saunders and Jack Hildebrand, Chris Joliet (age 75!) and Jim Balog.
In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his son Curt Benjamin Bannon whose tragic death in 2008 left a huge void in Greg’s life.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Jeffrey Hurwitz for his excellent care, he was always there for Greg and he always listened.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro.
A celebration of life will take place at 1pm on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at the Funeral Home. His nephew Dale Bannon Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, next to his son Curt.
