Janet Heckert

December 11, 1932 — November 16, 2020

Janet Shirley (Smith) Heckert, 87, of Emmitsburg, Maryland, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Ministries Nursing Care Facility. She was the wife of the late Richard Heckert.

Born on December 11, 1932 in Westminster, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late John and Ruth (Bowers) Smith. She was a graduate of Frederick High School. Throughout her life she had a few different jobs but her favorites where her time spent as a pharmacy aide at FMH, a dental office secretary while living in Apopka FL, and Moore Business Forms in Thurmont.  She was strongly dedicated to the Lutheran faith and was a member of St. Johns in Thurmont.

Janet enjoyed anything Elvis (with a special thanks to Taylor Brown who routinely visited patients at St. Josephs as impersonator). She enjoyed country music, dancing especially the jitterbug and watching the Days of Our Lives. Her family was above all her favorite thing. She enjoyed visiting with her family and spending time with them every chance she got.

She is survived by her daughter, Christine Kreitz and husband Michael; granddaughter, Susan Reaver and husband Brian and grandson Brian Smith; great children, Lizbeth Bull, Patrick Reaver, Nicholas Reaver and Brianna Smith and great-great grandchildren, Aubrey Bull and Caleb Reaver.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to all of the caregivers at St. Josephs Ministries who became like her second family.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at 1pm at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Johns Lutheran Church, 15 N. Church Street, Thurmont, MD 21788 or to St. Josephs Ministries at 331 South Seton Avenue, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
