Janice Dorsey

November 12, 1941 — February 16, 2020

Janice Marie Dorsey was called to God’s throne on Sunday, February 16, 2020 after an extended battle with several illnesses.

Billie, as she was better known, was the eldest of her eight children.  Billie received her education in the Frederick County Public Schools system.  In 1959, she was a member of the last graduating class of segregated Lincoln High School.  Billie has a long and varied work history.  She started her employment history working as a salesclerk at the former Melart Jewelers at the Frederick Shopping Center.  After the closing of Melart, Billie became a salesclerk at the former Diane Dress Shop.  In 1968, she became one of the first employees of the newly formed Community Action Agency of Frederick County Government, located at Winchester Hall, then the seat of Frederick County Government.  Janice worked in several administrative positions at the Community Action Agency where she gained many lifetime friends.  At the birth of her 2nd child, Billie took several domestic positions.  Upon retirement, Billie became active in community service.  In 2010, she was asked to serve as a housing Commissioner for Frederick City Housing Authority by then Chairman Bernard Brown.  Billie served as a Frederick Housing Commissioner until her illness prevented her from continued service.  Billie was also member of St. Johns Bible Fellowship church, where she served on the Trustee and Mother Boards.  “Bingo Billie” as she was affectionately known by some, will also be remembered for her love of games, and vast wealth of knowledge.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Charles W. Shern and Marqueze Shern (née Williams); two brothers, Charles “Butch” Shern & Gerald “Jackrabbit” Shern; and two sisters Dorothea Swaizer and Ida Dorsey.

Surviving to carry on her memory are the love of her life George “Toddie” Dorsey;  her children- Terrell Shern Dorsey, Michelle Myers (Charles) & Stephanie Dorsey all of Frederick, Maryland; grandchildren-Pamela “Pam” Pinkett, Tamaira “Mimi” Hawkins (Terry), Terrell “Man” Dorsey (Chereen), Ciera Yoho (Ely), Charles “Charlie” Myers, Jr.; great grandchildren-Lennwood Saunders III, Aiden Hawkins, Caiden Hawkins, Adrian Saunders, Ariyana “Ari” Saunders, Anaya Mcgreevey, Kaison Yoho and Lovada Dorsey; Siblings- Patricia Miller, Pastor Julius Shern (Linda) and Rhonda Irvins.  Billie will also be endearingly remembered by her longtime friend Placid “Ann” Collins & her friend and roommate Ruby Harrison.  She will also be remembered by numerous other family members & friends.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, with a celebration of life service to begin at 11 a.m. Officiating will be her brother, Pastor Julius Shern.

Interment will be private.
