Kay "Gar" Gant

June 18, 1947 — August 3, 2020

Mrs. Kay L. Gant aka Gar, 73, of Frederick, MD, died on Monday, August 3, 2020 at Frederick Health Hospital after a very brief illness. She was the loving wife of Richard E. Gant Jr.

Born on June 18, 1947 in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mildred (Whiten-Naylor) Palm.

Kay was a graduate of Frederick High School class of 1965. She received her Associates Degree in Biblical Studies from International School of Ministry and also attended Frederick Community College studying Paralegal Studies.

In her early years, Kay was employed at various occupations. However, her most tenured employment was with State Farm Insurance Co. for 35 years. Following retirement, Kay worked as a paralegal for the Frederick County Office of the Legal Aid Bureau for the State of Maryland. She also worked the election poll in Frederick County for many years.

Kay loved her community and took pride in being an extremely active volunteer for many committees and organizations in Frederick City. Some of these included President and Co-Founder of Friends of Mullinex Park, the Fair Housing Commission of Frederick County and serving as the past President of AARCH, just to name a few. Kay also spent many of her early years volunteering at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Kay enjoyed bowling at Terrace Lanes in the Thursday night Women’s League and Friday night’s mixed doubles for many years. She was also a youth bowling coach on Saturday mornings. She also loved her National Women’s Bowling tournament trips with her teammates Kathy Ford, Carolyn Hall, Snook Shephard, Mildred Griffin, Diane Kerr and Claudia Ogle.

Kay was a devoted lifetime member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She served on many committees throughout the years and truly enjoyed her time in the Sunday school program where she saw young people grow in Christ. She enjoyed her role as a lay-leader of the church and was a longtime member of the Sisters of Joy Choir. The family would like to acknowledge her special spiritual relationship with Kita Bond-Wiggs and her heavenly angel Kierra “Domi Domi” Bond.

In addition to her husband Richard, Kay is survived by her daughters Daphnie Campbell (John) of Martinsburg, WV and Lesley Gant-Goines (Larry) of Douglasville, GA; grandchildren, Ashleigh Fossett, Brittane Goines, Alexandra Fossett, Larry Goines Jr. and Braden Goines; great-grandchildren, Nolan and Camden Peters and honorary grandson Mekhi Bryan. She is also survived by siblings, Samuel E. Palm (Janet), Gerald Palm, Tracey Claggett (Menjou), and sister-in-law Gayle Wims-Palm, Pastor Charlotte Scott (Richard), Brenda Foreman (Raymond); nieces and nephews, Rebecca Gant, Danielle Henderson (Douglas), Jay Foreman (Lisa), Endya Palm, Richard Scott Jr., Shyla Palm, Menjou Claggett II, Markus “ Doctor” Claggett, Officer Matthew Scott, Tracey Lorraine Palm and her very special great nephew and niece Menjou Claggett III and Milah Claggett, special cousin, Eric Sappington Jr. and a host of friends and relatives. She will also be missed by her very special friend of 68 years, Lynda Weedon-Bowie and friends Virgina Carroll, Rose Chaney, Betty Bowie, Marie Disney, Brenda Tillery, "Cousin Sugar" aka Mary Ann Turney and Teresa Brown and her friend and Doctor Robert Kaufmann.

In addition to her parents, Kay was preceded in aunts and uncles, Charles Palm (Addie), Robert Palm (Polly), Augustus Palm, John Palm, Betty Naylor, Margaret Naylor, Dorothy Thompson (Leonard), Mary Layer (David), Elijah Naylor Sr. (Delores), June Naylor (Marie), Melvin Naylor (Elizabeth), Rudolph Naylor, Leon Naylor and Caudwell Whiten.
