Mabel Eaton

d. October 10, 2012

Mrs. Mabel Elizabeth Kneale Eaton, 96, of Mentor, Ohio, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Glade Valley Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Walkersville, Maryland.  She was born July 25, 1916, in Painesville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Stanley Kneale and Catherine Quayle Kneale.  Throughout her life she was proud of this Manx heritage.

Mrs. Eaton graduated in 1935 from Harvey High School in Painesville and later from the Lake Erie Business College.  She married Robert F. Eaton on May 7, 1941; and after 58 years they were separated by his death in 1999.

Besides being wife, mother, and homemaker, she worked for Maple Brook Dairy Co. and Ohio Rubber Co. in the 1940s, in payroll.  She received the Army “E” for excellence award for her work at Ohio Rubber during World War II.  She was also church secretary at Mentor United Methodist for many years.  She and husband Bob built their King Memorial Road home, where the family raised purebred Shropshire sheep.  She loved nature, gardening (entering prize-winning snapdragons at the Lake County, Ohio, Fair), walking, bicycling, her sable collies (Skipper, Buckeye, and Harvey) and the family dogs (Nicky and Shep).  Birding provided life-long pleasure, and she was a proud volunteer on the Blue Bird Trail at the Holden Arboretum.  She was a Cub Scout leader, Girl Scout leader, and an enthusiastic 4-H Club supporter.  She enjoyed music, beginning with church choir in her youth; she was a great reader, and remained engaged with the world around her, constantly learning and maintaining a particular fascination with foreign languages.

She was preceded in death also by three sisters, infant Ruth, Helen Katherine (Durand), and Ruby Esther (Call).  She is survived by a sister, Lois Evelyn Griffin of Painesville, Ohio; daughter Margaret and husband William Bruckart of Frederick, Maryland; granddaughter Abigail (Bruckart) and husband Jeffery Owens of Buena Vista, Colorado; son Timothy and wife Vicki Eaton, of Victoria, Texas; two grandsons, Travis and Trevor Eaton, and granddaughter April and husband Jimmy Driscoll; three great-grandchildren, Koda Eaton, Bailey Raab and Harley Driscoll, all from Texas.  She will be fondly remembered by Helen Armstrong of Ft. Myers, Florida.

Her family wishes to express appreciation and thanks to the Glade Valley Center, Walkersville, MD, for the support and care of Mabel.

There will be no visitation.  Her family will receive friends at the home of her daughter (8533 Indian Springs Rd.) on Sunday, October 14, 2012, at 2 PM to celebrate her life. Private interment will be in Mentor, Ohio.  Memorial contributions may be made to Brook Hill United Methodist Church Endowment Program, 8946 Indian Springs Rd., Frederick, MD 21702, or to the charity of your choice.
