Mary Smoot

Mary Agnes Smoot, age 91, resident of Little Orleans, Maryland, formerly of Mt. Airy, MD, passed from this life on  Febuary 7, 2020.       ,

Born on October 5, 1928, in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Robert Preston Butler and Mary Catherine (Gilroy) Butler.  On December 16, 1949, she married James Robert Smoot who passed away in April 1988. They celebrated 39 years of marriage.

Mary Attended Eastern High School in Washington, DC and had been employed in the Federal Government in accounting and the Prince Georges County Public Schools System as a Secretary.

Mary, in her earlier years, enjoyed bowling with her sister Barbara and friends and taking trips with the Seniors Group in Mt. Airy.  She enjoyed holidays with her family; speaking with her daughter daily.  Mary enjoyed talking on her phone to all her family and friends and enjoyed spoiling all the pets she had throughout the years.

Also left to cherish her memory her two children daughter, Joyce Lee Magrogan of Bethesda, MD and son, Kenneth R. Smoot and his wife, Rita of Little Orleans, MD; three grandchildren, KathleenTaylor and husband Robert, Jennifer Arbogast and husband, Luke and James Smoot; three great-grandchildren, Connor Taylor, Colton Smoot and Lorelei Taylor; her siblings, John Butler and wife, Abby of Monrovia, MD and Catherine Smith and husband, Doug of Goldsboro, NC.  She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, William, Charles, Pat and Cecil Butler; sisters, Frances Grier, Edith Cross, Laura Jones, Emily Butler, Susan Glidden and Barbara Johnson; great-granddaughter Natalee Rose Arbogast.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 8 East Ridgeville in Mt. Airy, MD 21771 on Saturday, February 15, 2020.  A Celebration of her life will follow at 12:00 pm. Rev. James McBride will officiate. A reception at the funeral home will immediately follow.

Private interment will be at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in  Brentwood, MD.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Multiple sclerosis or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
