William Richard Talley

May 23, 1927 — September 25, 2007

Mr. William Richard Talley, age 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, September 25, 2007. Born in Frederick on May 23, 1927, he was the son of the late Marion Clay Talley and Mildred Elizabeth Cromwell Talley. He was the husband of Louise Hendrickson Talley, his wife of 56 years.

After graduating from Frederick High School in 1944, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served proudly until August 1946 in the 13th Defense Battalion, quartered at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In 1947 he entered the University of Maryland and graduated in 1951 with a degree in physical education, health and recreation. He began his teaching career at Elm Street Junior High School and was then offered the position of physical education teacher at Walkersville High School. He spent 20 exciting and memorable years with the Lions, coaching JV and Varsity soccer, basketball, and track and field. His teams met with much success-unbeaten seasons of soccer, two state championships and several runner-up wins in basketball, and outstanding performances in track and field on the state level.

In 1973, after 20 years, Bill retired from active coaching and transferred his talents to the work-study program. In 1978 he retired from Walkersville High School, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to a game well played and to his boys to whom he was a father figure. Bill was especially proud of his association with Lincoln High School and the many fine athletes coached by Bill Lee. In 1979 Bill was honored by being named to the Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of Fame.

Bill's association with Frederick City Recreation spans many years. When he was 14 and 15, he volunteered with the city summer playground program. He also worked at the miniature golf course which later became Tiny Tog Town. In the late 40's Bill worked directly with Supervisor of Playgrounds, Helma Hann Bowers, helping her to staff the playgrounds and swimming pools. He soon opened the first teen centers in the city-one at South Frederick and one at TJ. In 1975 Mrs. Bowers retired and Bill became responsible for the city playground program.

From 1978-1993 Bill served as the first full time Director of Recreation for Frederick City. When the Armory became available, Bill adapted the facility for use as the City of Frederick Recreation Center. In 1996 the City named the facility the William R. Talley Recreation Center-an honor of which he was most proud.

Bill was a life-long member of All Saint's Episcopal Church. He was also a member of the 29th Division Association, Maryland Chapter-1st Marine Division, AMVETS Post # 2, VFW Post 3285, and various educational organizations.

Bill will be truly missed by the members of the Friday Morning Breakfast Club, the Once-a-Month Dinner Group, and friends at the Owl's Club.

Surviving Bill in addition to his wife are daughters, Mary Hunt Talley Billy and husband John of Reston, VA., Elizabeth Cromwell Talley Barone and husband Gaetano of Jacksonville, NC., sons, William R. Talley, Jr. and wife Lydia of Frederick and John Clay Talley of New Market; grandchildren, John Clay Billy and wife Kirsten Clark of Edmonds, WA., Francesco G.
