Mary Claire Smith

Mary Claire Horan Smith, age 94, passed peacefully February 7th, 2022. Mary was born September 24th, 1927 to Raymond and Mary Horan in Wilkes Barre, PA. Mary Claire was the second of three children. She had two brothers who pre-deceased her, Raymond Horan in 2013 and younger brother Robert Horan in 2020.

Mary Claire moved to Washington D.C. area when she was just 18, she lived with two of her best friends Lois and her sister Gina. While in DC she worked at the Census Bureau. She met the love of her life while in DC - Joe W. Smith. They were married in September of 1953 and raised three children of whom they were very proud. They were married for over fifty years and have a wonderful marriage. Joe died in 2007, prior to his passing, they traveled extensively visiting almost every state and a few islands. They enjoyed attending army reunions throughout the United States. They were also involved with the Calvert County Lions Club. Mary and Joe each received the Melvin Jones Fellow award for dedication and service in the Lions Club.

Mary Claire moved from Calvert County to Charlestown Retirement Community in 2017. She enjoyed living at Charlestown and met many wonderful people. She really enjoyed the sing-alongs on Friday evenings. Mary Claire has been blessed with good friends throughout her life.

She was the proud mother of three, grandmother of six, and great grandmother of one. She leaves her three children Joseph (Katherine), Kathleen (Edward) and Raymond (Mary). Six Grandchildren Jennifer (Julio), Kayla, Eddie, Sidney, Sarah and Elizabeth, and great grandchild Naomi.

In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to the Calvert County Lions Club.

A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church at Charlestown Retirement Community, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD 21228. The family will receive friends from 11:30 - 12:30 at church.

Interment will be at Cheltenham Veteran’s Cemetery at a later date.
